The inhibitory effects of berry-derived flavonoids against neurodegenerative processes

چکیده
Evidence suggests that a combination of oxidative stress, neuroinflammation and the formation of endogenous neurotoxins contribute to the underlying neuronal death associated with neurodegenerative diseases. In this study we have investigated the ability of the berry-derived flavonoids to protect against neuronal damage induced by neuroinflammation and the neurotoxin 5-S-cysteinyl-dopamine. The flavanols (+)-catechin and (–)-epicatechin, but not the anthocyanidin pelargonidin, were observed to attenuate LPS/IFN-induced TNFproduction in glial cells and associated neuronal injury. In contrast, pre-treatment of primary cortical neurons with pelargonidin, (+)-catechin and (–)-epicatechin (0.1 and 0.3 M) resulted in concentration-dependant protection against 5-S-cysteinyl-dopamine-induced neurotoxicity. Together these data suggest that berry-derived flavonoids may offer some protection against the neuronal injury relevant to the aetiology of the Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

Inhibitory Effect of Scutellaria pinnatifida Extracts on the Alpha Synuclein Cytotoxicity
Background: Many of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are associated with formation of the protein aggregates called amyloidal fibrils. Fibrillization of alpha-synuclein seems to be a key stage in the creation and progression of NDs and finding the compounds that inhibit the toxicity of alpha-synuclein aggregates seems to be one of the most attention subjects in the neurodegenerative studies. ...

Growing evidence from tissue culture, animal, and clinical models suggests that the flavonoid-rich fruits of the North American cranberry and blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) have the potential ability to limit the development and severity of certain cancers and vascular diseases including atherosclerosis, ischemic stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases of aging. The fruits contain a variety of phyto...
متن کاملThe effect of flavonoids in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease: review article
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent age-related neurodegenerative disorder worldwide, and no cure or prevention has been found for it. Extracellular senile plaque and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles are two important histopathological hallmarks of AD, which are both harmful for the cell. Senile plaques are composed of amyloid beta and neurofibrillary tangles are formed by hyper...
